This project focuses on the realization of a high-end 20 m³ koi pond where absolute water clarity and biosecurity are the primary objectives. Given that koi are “large polluters” that produce high levels of nutrients and require stable conditions to thrive, a professional-grade filtration system was required to manage the high biological load and ensure the vitality of the fish.
System Configuration
To maintain a perfect biological balance, the pond is equipped with a comprehensive, multi-stage filtration line designed for maximum efficiency:
- Sieve pre-filtration: Removes coarse debris immediately to prevent clogging of the subsequent stages.
- Bead Filter: Provides intensive mechanical and biological filtration to process ammonia and nitrates.
- Protein skimmer (Eiwitafschuimer): Effectively removes dissolved organic compounds and proteins before they can break down into pollutants.
- Blue Eco pond pump: A high-capacity pump ensures a high circulation rate, which is necessary for maintaining oxygen levels and ensuring all water passes through the treatment units frequently.
- Xclear Buster UV-C 140 Watt: Final disinfection stage that neutralizes harmful microorganisms and ensures optimal water clarity.
The Power of the Xclear Buster UV-C 140 Watt
Because of the professional setup and the sensitive nature of a koi population, the Xclear Buster UV-C 140 Watt was selected as the definitive disinfection solution. While a standard koi pond typically requires 3 to 4 Watts per 1,000 liters (which would be 60–80W for this volume), the 140W Buster was chosen to provide “overcapacity” for superior disinfection and to handle the high flow rates generated by the Blue Eco pump.
